Relationships: Becoming A Whole Person

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. What does it mean to be or feel like a whole person? Well if you’ve felt it you already know. Most however have never felt it. If the latter is you it essentially means that you feel afraid of and avoid facing all the challenges in your life in some way. In other words you feel incapable of “steering” the ship of your life yourself and “need” some one else to take the wheel from time to time. Many consider this to be the function of relationships i.e. pass the wheel to your partner so that he/she can steer your life through the more hazardous sections of roadway. This of course leads to what many have termed “codependency” which I have also written about in this ezine. Do you like feeling less than whole? Probably not because it makes you feel needy, ineffective, anxious, defective, incapable, fearful, dependent, controlling, angry, panicked, overwhelmed, sad, trapped, manipulative, and so on. Well does that give you a good picture of what “not being whole” is doing to your life now? You see many individuals try to get others to “do it for them” because they feel too afraid to take responsibility for their own lives. This of course leads to all the feelings I mentioned above. That isn’t a nice way to feel is it? I wanted to stress these feelings because so many individuals try to “not feel” them assuming that by numbing themselves to their situation it will just go away. But does it? Being honest about feeling the state of your personal situation is the first step to becoming a whole person. In those feelings lies the motivation to change your self and the course of your life. To drive the point home; if your car was heading for an embankment would closing your eyes and pretending to yourself that everything was fine make you feel comfortable? Would it help resolve your situation? Of course not! So you see, no matter how bad you may feel, those feelings are the key to your freedom and your ability to achieve a sense of wholeness. Now I’m not suggesting that one should make a habit of feeling badly, only recognize when one is and be personally honest about the cause of the bad feelings. How to Quickly Find and Sell Old, Valuable Books and Cookbooks

By Helen Hecker Old books can make for a fun home-based business while giving you a profitable side business that will make you money and cultural experiences too. You may already have a nice collection of old, rare, vintage or antique books or cookbooks. Cookbooks are the third most popular category among new books and a good one to start with. People often raid their parents’ and grandparents’ collections to find good used cookbooks. To find and buy old books, first check your local library for its “Friends of the Library” book sales. They have annual sales of donated books and many antique dealers line up for these. Of course it helps to know your prices, so to begin with you might stick to a particular category, for example cookbooks. You can usually get books for 25 cents to a dollar and on the last day they have a bag sale. Sometimes you can get books free at the end of the sale. But the best time to go is the night before the sale when they let the members of the “Friends” buy cheap, in advance of the sale. Membership usually runs about $10 a year and you can easily make your money back with your first sale. It’s a good cause besides. You want to look for books that you’ve done your research on, of course, but also look for any book from the pre 1900s in fair condition. They will usually get you at least ten times what you paid for it. Also look at flea markets, garage sales, estate sales and auctions. I found a signed copy of a rare, signed Julia Child cookbook with dust jacket intact in fine condition at an estate sale. It was also signed by her husband Paul Child, the illustrator. The book was appraised at $500. The house was in an area of little houses with older folks. Don’t judge a book by its cover or a house by its appearance I guess is the lesson here! You never know what you’ll find. I also found some other great cookbooks and books there. To research the value I would avoid the usual rare book price guides. Many of these are outdated. The actual price is today’s price. To find out what the books should sell for, go to your favorite search engine and type in the title. You should be able to find sites that are selling the same title and give you a broad range to choose from. Finding ’sold’ book prices are much better. One you’ve established a price, the fastest way to sell these books is to sell them online at your own website or get a free one from any of the sites who are offering this service. I’d definitely add photos of the books. They should be of high quality. Take close up shots of the title page and a sample recipe page. Take shots from different angles. Pick about six of your best shots. If you’re in hurry, price them lower than the other books. If you aren’t in a hurry price them at the high end of the range. Then when the others are sold your price will be a bargain. Antique books will generally rise in price as they become rare. Of course there are many other ways to sell your old books. eBay is another of course. And there are lots of ways to sell them offline too. Be open to different venues. Finding and selling old, rare, vintage or antique books or cookbooks is great fun, with very little upfront costs. Outdoor Wood Furniture - Check the Method of Construction Before Buying

By Malcolm Kay Before the advent of mass production, most furniture was largely handcrafted by artisans. Of course, time has moved on and construction techniques, mechanical tools, and methods have advanced significantly. But in choosing outdoor furniture, it’s very important to take note on how the particular item is assembled, how the joints are made, what fixings are used, the strength of the individual components and the quality of the finish. For commercial outdoor furniture, which needs to withstand not only the weather but also mistreatment and neglect, the centuries old joining method of mortice and tenon is still generally preferred. A well-made item of furniture, with mortice and tenon joints will be solid, with tight joints and will last for years. But of course the extra time and care taken in this method of construction means the price will inevitably be higher of the furniture item. To speed up construction and keep costs down, allot of furniture is now constructed using a dowelled joints. Whilst not as strong as traditional mortice and tenon joints, a dowelled joint can give many years of good service. In fact a lot of furniture may use mortice and tenon joints for the main structural elements but dowels for the more decorative elements in the design - a perfectly acceptable compromise. Of course any adhesives used should be water resistant, something that is not really possible to check, but generally this does not seem to be a problem in practice, except maybe in really low cost outdoor furniture. For added strength, some makers will combine brass fittings with dowelled joints to ensure the dowelled joints are pulled together and kept as tight as possible. The cheapest method of construction uses metal fixings only. Often these are used with kit-set or knock-down self assembly furniture, as it allows the homeowner to save more money by assembling the product themselves. The downside is that such furniture is generally not as strong and involves regular tightening of the fittings, as they tend to bed into the wood with continual use of the furniture. Also inferior quality fittings may be used which are neither made of corrosion resistant metals such as brass, nor have a high quality plated finish, so can be subject to rusting or other corrosion at quite an early stage. Another less obvious problem with tables in particular, is swelling of the wood. As wood generally expands at a different rate in its longitudinal and tangential planes, this means that as the timber gets wet or dries out, unsightly gaps can occur at joints, or in the worst cases, the timber twists out of shape, if the maker has not taken sufficient care at the design stage. You need to take care for example with some wooden table tops, if the middle of the table is a more complex design with elements running both straight and perpendicular. Most manufacturers will leave small expansion gaps at the end of the longitudinal wood sections to allow for some expansion and contraction. With some more stable wood species such as teak, this is typically not a problem, but with some other species, expansion in both directions can be significantly different and problems can arise. Take note also of the finish of the piece. With certain wood species, the grain of the timber can be rather coarse, so unless the edges of the piece are sanded well, it’s possible to get splinters. Take particular note of the end grain. Many manufacturers apply a special oil coating or wax to the end grain to prevent the ingress of water and help to prolong the life of the furniture. Most manufacturers will apply some type of initial protective coating, although this is generally a rather basic coating which tends to enhance the colour of the wood rather than contributing to any particular preservative properties. To ensure a longer life, it is thus recommended that you give your furniture a further coating with a good quality decking or furniture oil very shortly after you purchase the item, and certainly within the first six months of its use. And so, in conclusion, when looking at purchasing outdoor furniture, the important points to consider (apart from the durability of the wood species) are the type of joints, the thickness of timber used, the quality of any metal fixings and the actual design aspects of the particular piece. No matter what Ido, Rodney never seems satisfied or happy.Nothing I do is ever enough! Q: Do you believe you can make Rodney happy? A: Yes, I think I should be able to. I try to dowhat he wants-I avoid disagreements with him, Iwatch the movies he wants to see, we go out withhis friends, I dress the way he wants. But he’snever satisfied. Q: Why do you believe you can make him happy? A: Because if I don’t make him happy, he’ll leaveme. Q: Do you know if that’s true? A: I believe that it’s true. Q: Why do you believe that? A: Because he gets upset if I don’t do everythinghe wants to do. Q: What might you be concerned would happen ifyou didn’t believe he’d leave you? A: When you put it that way, I’m not sure. Hmm.Maybe my being happy is as important as his beinghappy. Q: Do you believe it could be? A: Yeah… Wow. What a concept! I could befocusing on making myself happy! Q: Would that be okay with you? A: Maybe it would be okay, because right nowneither one of us is happy. Even in this excerpt, you see Claire’s limitingbeliefs start to loosen up and shake free. Shehas been acting from the myth that she isresponsible for Rodney’s happiness and that sheis responsible for keeping them together. In thissession, it occurred to her that she was notputting enough importance on her own happiness. Claire continued to explore this idea and uncovermore insights in subsequent sessions. And, at thesame time, her actions began to change. More andmore often, she took care of her own needs andexpressed her feelings and opinions to Rodney.One day she reported in amazement that he wasmuch nicer to her now, as she got moreindependent. (However, there are no guaranteesabout how someone will react to ourtransformations.) Tool Kit for Unraveling the Myth If you think you may have the tendency to loseyourself in relationships, look for a belief thatcould be underlying this behavior, such as, “Imust do –, or I won’t be loved,” then askyourself these questions: Do I believe that? Why do I believe that? What seems true about that? What am I concerned might happen if I didn’tbelieve that? (What might happen that I would notlike?) Something you have held as true may reveal itselfto be a myth-not true, and damaging to yourhappiness and your relationships. Keep askingyourself these questions, and more insights willunfold. You’ll know the myth is unraveling whenyou see your actions and reactions change. Whereyour actions were frozen in a self-defeatingpattern, you’ll now discover a flow of optionsand more peace.
